Espresso
Americano
Americano is an espresso drink diluted with hot water. It is believed that US soldiers in Italy during World War II came up with the idea to dilute espresso with hot water in search of a coffee they were used to at home. Original americano does not have milk in it. Of course, you can add milk if you want, but it is not the original form of the drink. Sweeteners are not included in the original americano, either.
Latte
Vanilla latte is a coffee-based drink typically made with espresso, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup. Vanilla latte is sweeter and creamier than regular coffee latte, thanks to vanilla syrup. The vanilla syrup adds a rich flavor to the coffee and balances out the bitterness of espresso. So, the vanilla latte is usually preferred by people who like sweeter and milder coffee tastes.
Cappuccino
Cappuccino is a milky coffee made with espresso and steamed milk. It is known as an Italian drink today, but in fact, it originated in Austria. Italy is the place where cappuccino gained popularity.
Flat White
A flat white is a coffee drink consisting of espresso with micro foam (steamed milk with small, fine bubbles and a glossy or velvety consistency). It is comparable to a latte, but smaller in volume and with less micro foam, therefore having a higher proportion of coffee to milk, and milk that is more velvety in consistency – allowing the espresso to dominate the flavor, while being supported by the milk.
Mocha
A mocha, also called mochaccino is a chocolate-flavored warm beverage that is a variant of a latte commonly served in a glass rather than a mug. Other commonly used spellings are mocha chino and also mochaccino. The name is derived from the city of Mokha, Yemen, which was one of the centres of early coffee trade. Like latte, the name is commonly shortened to just mocha.
Shakerato
A shakerato is an Italian drink prepared using espresso and ice cubes. It is popular and easily obtainable in Italy. The shakerato is prepared by shaking together a shot of espresso with ice cubes in a cocktail shaker and simple syrup. Once a frothy consistency has been obtained it is strained into a glass. It is usually served in a martini glass. Sometimes, Baileys is added to give an alcoholic twist.
Macchato
In Italian, the term "macchiato" translates as "marked" or "stained", meaning a stained or marked coffee. The macchiato is an espresso coffee drink, topped with a small amount of foamed or steamed milk to allow the taste of the espresso to still shine through.
Cortado
A cortado is a beverage consisting of espresso mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. The milk in a cortado is steamed, but not frothy and "texturized" as in many Italian coffee drinks. The cortado comes from Spain, most likely Madrid, where it is commonly served. The word cortado is the past participle of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut), in the sense of "dilute", and can refer variously to either coffee or espresso drinks throughout Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries.
Espresso
Espresso is a concentrated form of coffee, served in shots. It's made of two ingredients - finely ground, 100% coffee, and hot water.
Coffee
Drip
Drip coffee is made by pouring hot water onto ground coffee beans, allowing it to brew. There are several methods for doing this, including using a filter. Terms used for the resulting coffee often reflect the method used, such as drip-brewed coffee, filtered coffee, or immersion-brewed coffee in general. Manually brewed drip coffee is typically referred to as pour-over coffee. Water seeps through the ground coffee, absorbing its constituent chemical compounds, and then passes through a filter. The used coffee grounds are retained in the filter, while the brewed coffee is collected in a vessel such as a carafe or pot.
Cafe au Lait
Café au lait ( French for "coffee with milk") is coffee with hot milk added. It differs from white coffee, which is coffee with cold milk or other whiteners added.
Red Eye
A drip coffee with a shot of espresso poured on top. First known usage: The red eye started showing up as “shot in the dark” or “coffee with a shot” as word of mouth at local coffee shops in the United States, likely in the late '90s.
Black Eye
A black eye coffee is a very simple drink. It’s a cup of normal drip coffee, either iced or hot, with a double shot of espresso. The name is said to have come from the way the coffee looks when you add the shots in, but we think the name comes from the fact that this drink feels like a punch to the face. This thing will seriously wake you up, and it’s obvious why.
Pour Over
Pour over is a special manual drip brewing method that allows for a high level of control over the results. Using a cone designed to hold a filter and coffee grounds, hot water is slowly poured in a spiral pattern over all the grounds and collected in a cup below.
Cold Brew
Cold brew coffee is usually made by steeping coffee in water for a number of hours at cold or ambient (room) temperature. This slow, low temp brew makes cold brew taste very different from hot brewing the same type of coffee beans: mild chocolate and mellow, low acidity fruits are common flavor notes.
Tea and Things
Hot Tea
Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia which probably originated in the borderlands of southwestern China and northern Myanmar.
Iced Tea
Ice tea or iced tea is a drink made from tea without milk but with sugar and sometimes fruit flavorings, drunk cold.
Chai
Chai consists of black tea brewed with water, milk, spices and a sweetener, such as honey or sugar, offering a fragrant and sweet aroma and flavor. The spices included in chai can vary, but the most common spices used are cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and cloves.
Matcha
Matcha is a Japanese green tea powder made from green tea leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant. This is the same plant that green tea is from. However, matcha is grown and processed different than regular green tea.
London Frog
A London fog is a hot tea-based drink that consists of Earl Grey tea, steamed milk, and a sweetener.
Hot Cocoa
Hot chocolate, also known as hot cocoa or drinking chocolate, is a heated drink consisting of shaved or melted chocolate or cocoa powder, heated milk or water, and usually a sweetener. It is often garnished with whipped cream or marshmallows.
